Robert Marc Lehmann is a marine biologist, research diver and photographer. His investigations into the threats to our oceans often take him underwater – as was the case in May during the "Week of Ghost Nets“. With his team "submaris" and partner project „wir T.U.N. M.E.H.R." by MEGAZOO & FRIENDS, he went hunting for ghost nets from May 20 to 28, 2021. During the dives at a depth of 10 m, the divers had to cope with poor visibility and could mostly only move slowly in order not to get caught in the ghost nets themselves. It is all the more remarkable how much the team around Robert was able to recover this week: besides old car tyres, a ladder and other rubbish, the team recovered 3 tons of ghost nets with a total length of 3,000 meters! Volunteers then carefully scanned them for any surviving animals and saved the lives of many more crabs and other animals. The Schleswig-Holstein water police also assisted in the operation.
Whether Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Antarctic or the Indian Ocean - Robert Marc Lehmann has dived and explored them all. He has dived through the Blue Holes in the Bahamas, explored the Arctic underwater world at -1.8 degrees Celsius and rescued a stranded orca in New Zealand. In his more than 120 missions around the world so far, he's always driven by the same thought: "The world is worth fighting for."
