ghost nets?

Hamburg, the stunning "Gateway to the World", where our city stands proudly at the mouth of the Elbe River into the North Sea. Despite its undisputed beauty, our sea, like many other oceans, is under serious threat. The reason for this is the devastating spread of plastic in our waters.

Shockingly, between 30 and 50 percent of marine litter is made up of old, lost or intentionally sunk fishing nets. Every year, up to 1 million tons more of these so-called “ghost nets” end up in our oceans, doing what they do best: keep fishing. They kill countless marine animals, threaten ecosystems and decompose into dangerous microplastics over the next 400-600 years.

the solution

BRACENET is putting an end to the ghost nets! Together with its partners Healthy Seas, Ghost Diving and Nofir, the team recovers nets from all the world's oceans or takes over used nets directly from fisheries so that they don't end up in the oceans in the first place. BRACENET then gives the former fishing nets a new life and processes them in fair upcycling by hand in Hamburg into new products such as bracelets (the "Bracenets"), key chains, anklets and much more.
