mapoon protect

Nestled in the middle of the Queensland side of the Gulf of Carpentaria lies Mapoon - a Tjungundji biodiversity hotspot rich in marine and terrestrial life. Located approximately 900km north of Cairns on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Mapoon is a remote Indigenous community with stunning coastlines and diverse marine life. Unfortunately, like many remote places, Mapoon is facing a plastic crisis. Since 2023, Sea Shepherd Australia has supported the Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers on the frontline protecting Mapoon's coastlines. They have launched campaigns to tackle marine debris and protect the marine life that calls Mapoon home.

wildlife in Mapoon

While protecting turtle populations is a top priority for Mapoon rangers, the area is also home to a variety of fascinating marine life. These include the Great Hammerhead, Spotted Hammerhead, Winghead Shark, Eyebrow Wedgefish, Whitespot Eagle Ray, Cownose Ray, Hogsucker Shark, Nervous Shark, Lemon Shark, Sawtooth Shark, Freshwater Whipray and many more! Speartooth Sharks and Sawrays are critically endangered species that live in the waters around Mapoon and Mapoon Rangers work with researchers to protect them. Mapoon has two main river systems with the highest population of these species in Australia.

upcycling

BRACENET and Sea Shepherd Australia have joined forces to tackle plastic pollution in Mapoon. Together they are transforming collected fishing nets from the Mapoon Cleanup into keychains and bracelets.

For every BRACENET keychain and bracelet sold, €2 will be donated directly to Sea Shepherd Australia to support their vital work protecting the oceans and marine life in Mapoon and beyond.
