Small body, flat forehead, dark back and a blunt, triangular dorsal fin: that's how you recognize the harbour porpoise, the only whale species native to the North and Baltic Sea. Harbour porpoises are strictly protected, however, only around 500 individuals are still at home in the Central Baltic Sea. How come? Well, they are threatened from all sides – for example, by underwater noise, ghost nets and, above all, fishing. Gillnets, which are like large fences that extend underwater, are the biggest cause of death for harbour porpoises, as they get caught in them as so-called "bycatch." But aren't there marine protected areas set up specifically for harbour porpoises? Yes – but even here the use of gillnets is still allowed by German law. This has to end – so let’s fight it together and save the porpoises!

That's why we've teamed up with Whale & Dolphin Conservation, or WDC for short. This is the world's leading non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to the protection of whales and dolphins. It fights against whaling and bycatch as well as for the rights of whales and the protection of the oceans. We are happy to present our joint Bracenet! The Whale Conservation Bracenet comes as a pair with a porpoise pin – so you simultaneously set a statement for the protection of the oceans and the porpoises. The Bracenet consists of our ghost nets Baltic Sea and North Sea II and comes with a black magnetic clasp and a matching black whale tag. For each set, we donate 2 € to WDC to support the fight against bycatch. In addition, your donation finances a symbolic whale adoption. Since harbour porpoises are difficult to observe and identify, we decided to symbolically adopt the humpback whale Salt.

Salt is a very special whale: the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of many was first clearly identified in 1975, and through her, we know where her whale family migrates to each year at the onset of winter. She lives in the Gulf of Maine in summer and was seen again in the Caribbean in winter – she was recognized by the white markings on her dorsal fin, reminiscent of a salt crust, which gave her her name. Humpback whales can live up to 80 years, Salt is now over 40. With our joint sponsorship, we support projects to protect Salt's family worldwide.

About Bracenet

Fighting against ghost nets

The oceans are drowning in a flood of plastic waste, almost half of which consists of lost or abandoned fishing nets. Bracenet recovers these so-called ghost nets and upcycles them into beautiful and sustainable fashion accessories. We regularly donate to Healthy Seas to finance further recovery missions and preventive measures and support many other projects for the protection of the oceans and marine life.
